Character Info
Name: Mikasa Ackerman
Canon: Attack on Titan
Canon Point: Season 1 Episode 8, before learning that Eren is the Rogue Titan
Age: 15
History: Boop
Personality: Eren Jaeger. The boy who completely changed Mikasa's life for the better after a tragic incident during her childhood. He saved her from a fate worse than death and he (and his family) took her in when she had nothing. He became the defining aspect of her life and as such, the defining catalyst for her personality. Like a fairy tale, Eren entered Mikasa's life and became a big part of it over the course of a day.

But this wasn't a fairy tale. The world is far too cruel for such pleasantries.

That fateful day in her life began innocently enough, with a nine year old Mikasa enjoying life with her two loving parents. They were unexpectedly visited by human traffickers that day, who saw Mikasa and her mother as valuable merchandise due to their Asian descent. They killed her father and when she tried to defend her daughter, they murdered Mikasa's mother. They grabbed Mikasa and brought her to a cabin in the forest, where she truly believed she lost everything...then he came. A young boy insisting he got himself lost in the woods and stumbled upon this cabin. One of the men offered to help this boy and was promptly met with his demise. Another chased after him and was killed just as expediently. He freed Mikasa from her bonds and was quickly overwhelmed by the third man in the group. Life was slowly being choked out of the boy, yet he turned his attention towards Mikasa and the knife beside her. Through struggled breaths, he muttered:

"Fight. Fight. Fight...or die. Win...and live! The only way to win is to fight!"

Those words have stuck with Mikasa ever since. Those words along with the events that inspired them helped her realize what a cold, unforgiving world she lives in. A world where only the victorious may live...and if she wants to survive, she has to fight. Mikasa became very cold and composed after that night, in full control of her body even when bringing a knife into another human being. This carried on to present day, where her composure and self-control helped push her into the powerful individual she is. She can face frightening creatures several times her size and charge at them unfazed. While not completely fearless, she can remain calm in the most dire of situations and maintain rational thought.

Composure and self control are only part of it, however. Without a doubt, Mikasa's strongest attribute is her undying loyalty to those she cares for, especially Eren Jaeger. After saving her life that night, he gave her his scarf to help shield her from the cold, a scarf she treasures and has kept with her ever since. Very rarely will she ever take it off. The scarf wasn't all the Jaeger family offered the now orphaned Mikasa; Eren's father offered her their home, to take her in as one of their own. She gratefully accepted and has been eternally thankful for the Jaeger family ever since, especially Eren.

Her love for Eren fuels her composure and self-control, bestowing upon her the willpower to succeed at any task presented before her. Mikasa strives to protect Eren at any cost and her undying support for him is widely known among anyone who knows Eren. Eren can dash towards a group of bullies ready to fight and the bullies will scoff and taunt him as he makes his way. Those same bullies will see Mikasa running right alongside him and panic and immediately flee. Her drive to support and protect Eren is immensely powerful; even if she disagrees with his opinions and fails to steer him towards better options or one she would ultimately prefer, she will always stick with him through his final decision. Eren elected not to turn to a live of peace and quiet and instead insisted on joining the military to combat the titans that plague their world. Mikasa begrudgingly accompanies him and not only joins the Survey Corps alongside Eren, but graduates at the top of her class, several ranks above Eren. Even the chief instructor of her squad praises her prowess, claiming that she's "completely proficient in every area. It's apt to say she's an unmatched, unprecedented genius."

And that she is. Even if it's solely driven by the need to accompany Eren and protect him along the paths he chooses, she's an accomplished soldier in her own right. Her skills rival even the military's best soldiers, even though she's fresh out of training. Despite this, Mikasa is incredibly humble towards her abilities. Only once does she kick up a fuss about her training or her expertise as a soldier and even then, that was during the time she was so distraught over thinking Eren was dead, she couldn't think straight. She hardly kicks up any fuss, as a matter of fact. Conversations with her are typically serious without much room for anything else. Most others meet her more cold, withdrawn side, keeping her words and actions to the point. This can make it difficult for others to approach or even befriend her, which is intentional on Mikasa's part. She keeps a very closed circle of friends consisting of Eren and their mutual friend, Armin, and considers both her family. Others don't reach past colleague or other such professional relationships.

It's because of this that Mikasa is very distant around others and, to a certain extent, self-centered. Her main focus rarely extends past her loved ones and almost everything she does is only for those she cares about, especially Eren. However, there are those besides Eren that Mikasa cares for. Eren's parents, for agreeing to take him in. Armin is a childhood friend that she also values deeply, showing support for his ideas and suggestions even when others readily dismiss them as insane, such as using the rogue titan who was attacking other titans to help them take back a swarmed headquarters. Hannes was a soldier who could've saved Eren's mother, but in his cowardice, opted to take the young Eren and Mikasa and flee to safety. He confides in the two, telling them that he couldn't save her because he lacked the courage. Mikasa understands this completely and decides not to hold a grudge against him, instead respecting him for his efforts.

Still, that's not to say she'll refuse to help others if she sees fit. A civilian evacuation was halted by a merchant's greed as his carriage full of merchandise blocked the only escape and he refused to move it until it squeezed through. Mikasa stumbles upon this scene and is appalled, to say the least. Her comrades are fighting and dying to protect these people and one man's greed prolongs both the fights and the civilians' escape. Mikasa effortlessly knocks out the men accompanying the merchant and threatens to kill him if he doesn't move the cart.

He moves the cart.

I've mentioned Eren and Mikasa's relationship with him plenty of times here and that's intentional. He's a key figure and driving force in her life, so much so that her own life largely circles his. It's not to say that because of this, she can't continue living if she were to be without him. When Eren was believed to be dead, she did, in fact, nearly give up on life, kneeling down in the street and waiting for the approaching titan to take her. Instead, she found herself springing onto her feet and fighting back, confused by her own reactions. She soon realizes that it's because Eren's inspiring words from that traumatic point in her life were once again calling out to her, telling her to keep fighting, to never give up. If she died, she wouldn't be able to remember him and the strength he inspired in her. Even after death, he would still be with her, continuing to inspire her as he always did.

Mikasa is at her best when she has a cause or a person to believe in and by default, Eren is that cause and person. Fortunately, canon shows that she can find other causes to fight for, as she joined with the other soldiers after coming to her senses. She's still the best soldier in her regimen with a powerful sense of loyalty only a lucky few receive; what's left for her to figure out is what to do with the strength she possesses and potentially learning to live for herself. No journey of self-discovery is easy, but as Eren once told her, she cannot win if she doesn't fight. And if Eren wouldn't let her give up, why should she?
